Seraikela, March 11: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Seraikela SP and DC on the death of Mohan Murmu, a minor, in police custody at Seraikela Bal Mitra Thana lock-up in November 2022, sources said.

Sources said the NHRC has sought the report on 15 points within six weeks. The NHRC took cognizance of the minor’s mysterious custodial death on the complaint of human rights activist Shabab Nair of Chakradharpur.

In the letter, Nair had complained that Mohan Murmu was tortured in the lock-up by police. The minor’s body was found hanging with the help of a belt in the lock-up. Nair alleged that Seraikela police officials had demanded Rs 80,000 from the minor’s family for releasing him. But the minor’s family was unable to pay the amount, Nair said.

The NHRC has sought various details about police investigation and compliance of various mandatory procedures by the investigating officer and other cops at the police station, sources said.
