NHES hosts session on Mental Health

Jamshedpur: Narbheram Hansraj English School (NHES) organized three-day session on ‘Mental Health’ in the school auditorium from 23rd July to 25th July for the students of class VIII to XII.

The workshop was conducted by Shabri Prasad Singh, a writer and a mental health activist. Such sessions are pertinent considering the stress and trauma that the students in the adolescence age group face.

The sessions were very effective. Munmun Dutta, a student of Std.11 ‘C’ said, ‘Shabri mam told to love ourselves, be happy and have positive self-esteem’.
Another student Roshan Kumar of Std.9 ‘E’ told, ‘We were asked not to discriminate anyone on the basis of colour, height, physique and were given tips on how to focus on studies’.

Students connected well with Shabri Prasad Singh and many came up to discuss personal mental issues with her. Representatives from Jeevan were invited to attend the session. Students prone to depression were referred to Jeevan personnel.

Plans are afoot to form an email group in the future where students can write confidentially about their problems to the resource person and follow up face to face sessions can be organized.

Shabri Prasad Singh went to the City University of New York where she chose to major in Anthropology and Psychology. She is into painting, cooking and above all writing which gives her immense sense of peace. She has written a book called “Borderline” published by Bloomsbury, sharing her own life experiences to help others.

It is her mission in life to advocate mental health issues. She also works for Earth Matter Foundations and advocates a Green Movement. She is currently writing her second book, a psychological thriller. She has pledged half of her whole life’s income for mental health patients.
