NGT declines intervention in Jamshedpur house demolition case

Jamshedpur/Kolkata, August 23: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has dismissed the intervention petition filed by senior Supreme Court advocate Sanjay Upadhyay concerning the demolition of houses in Indranagar-Kalyan Nagar slum. Upadhyay had sought the Tribunal’s intervention, arguing that the notice issued by the Jamshedpur Zonal Officer for the demolition was linked to the NGT case and was based on NGT’s orders.

However, the NGT clarified that the demolition notice issued by the Jamshedpur Zonal Officer is unrelated to the NGT case concerning the Dalma Eco Sensitive Zone and the Swarnarekha riverbank. The Tribunal noted that the notice was purely a district administration matter and not connected to the reports or orders from NGT or the Forest Environment Department of Jharkhand.

The Tribunal also highlighted that there was no mention of the affected houses in the joint investigation report or the Chief Secretary’s affidavit. NGT indicated that should future reports or affidavits mention these houses under NGT directives, the petitioners could bring the matter before them again. For now, the case remains under the jurisdiction of the local administration.
