Jamshedpur, May 22: State food and civil supplies minister Saryu Rai on Sunday inaugurated a new electricity link to the water filter plant at Jawaharnagar, which will streamline piped drinking water supply in the entire Mango. The move will be benefitting a population of about 200,000.
The water filter plant, which caters to drinking water supply in Mango, was earlier linked to the Dimna Bustee power sub-station which was overloaded resulting in frequent power-cuts and disruption in water supply. The new connection is designed to provide from the Kuar Bustee sub-station which is not overloaded.
Apart from Roy, who is also the local legislator, the inaugural function was also attended by officials of Jharkhand UrjaVikas Nigam Limited (JUVNL) and drinking water and sanitation department.
“The water woes of residents of Mango will end from now. I am really happy that people of my constituency will now get proper drinking water supply with the new power connection,” said Roy.
Executive engineer of JUVNL, Siddharth Sharma who was also present on the occasion informed that Rs 75 lakh was spent for bringing the electricity connection to the water filter plant through a new feeder linked to the Kuar Bustee power sub-station. The move is designed to help the people in big way. The fund for the project was jointly contributed by Mango Notified Area Committee and JUVNL,” he said adding that with the new connection the filter plant will get power supply between 22-23 hours.
The senior JUVNL official revealed that in the previous arrangement when power supply was from the overloaded Dimna Bustee sub-station the filter plant was getting 17-18 hours of power hampering the water supply.
Sub-divisional officer of drinking water and sanitation department’s Mango unit, Umesh Kumar Singh said that Mango is divided into seven zones for drinking water supply.” The new power link from the Kuar Bustee sub-station will help us in improving water supply in our command areas,” said Singh.
The population of Mango is about 200,000 and people depend on ground water and tube wells. But the process of urbanization decreased recharge and increased withdrawal of ground water. Moreover, a huge amount of ground water is pumped out for residential, industrial and commercial use. Similar is the situation at Jugsalai, Pursidih, Karandih and Kitadih.
Local residents said that supply of extra water is necessary in Mango and other areas owing to the increasing demand.
The condition of the water is such that one would think twice before using it even for toilet. We have no choice but to use it for drinking, said a resident of Mango.
He said that many a times the residents have lodged complains at the municipality but nothing has been done so far. Situation has worsened from past one week and dirty water is being supplied.
