A new initiative �Safety is my Passion� launched in Tata Steel

Jamshedpur: A new initiative, �Safety is my Passion� was launched on Tuesday at Steelennium Hall. A total of 300 people participated in the event.

V N Gaikwad, Chief, Safety and Ergonomics, Tata Steel presented a comparative analysis of the behavioural Process and Contractor�s Safety from 2004 till date. Stressing on the objective of Zero Fatality, Gaikwad observed that though there is no loophole in spreading awareness regarding safety practices but it�s the lack of implementation of these measures that this organisation is yet not able to attain the target of zero fatality.

The session was followed by deliberation on various safety tools like SOPs, Toolbox Meetings etc. Many suggestions came from the audience like forming a team for inspecting the safety measures, counselling of the employees, prevention of road violation and more clarity in SOPs.

P N Singh, president, Tata Workers� Union (TWU) while addressing the audience, emphasized on an effective leadership to attain a safe and accident-free work zone. He further spoke about various aspects of safety such as zero tolerance, training and education.

Rajiv Kumar, PEO, Tata Steel described two specific concepts, American Concept and Japanese Concept, referring to Top to Bottom approach and vice versa. According to him, at present there is a dire need to exercise a mixture of these two concepts so as to attain the target to make Works a safe zone.

Avneesh Gupta, Chief Electrical Maintenance, Tata Steel stressed on the fact that safety and human life should be imbibed as a value system and not a mere matrix.

Tata Steel has always encouraged a two-way communication between the employees and the management. At the recent web conference conducted by T V Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel put forth the idea of an interactive session of individuals passionate about the idea of safety, said a company spokesperson.
