Monsoon finally arrives in Jharkhand after two days delay, brings much-needed relief to Jamshedpur residents

Jamshedpur: After a slight delay of two days, the eagerly awaited southwest monsoon made its official entry into Jharkhand on Tuesday, offering much-needed relief to farmers and citizens reeling under rising temperatures and dry conditions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that monsoon currents have swept across major districts including Ranchi, East Singhbhum, Dhanbad, and Bokaro, signaling the onset of the rainy season.

The normal date for the arrival of the monsoon in Jharkhand is June 15, a date that was revised from June 10 around five years ago. This year’s delay, while not drastic, had raised concerns among farming communities, especially those preparing for the critical kharif cropping season.

Officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, Kolkata, noted that the southwest monsoon has shown strong momentum and is likely to advance further into the remaining parts of the state within the next 48 hours. Light to moderate rainfall was already recorded in several areas of southern and central Jharkhand early Tuesday morning. IMD has predicted that heavier spells are expected in the coming days.

The arrival of the monsoon has brought smiles to the faces of thousands of farmers, particularly those in rain-fed regions of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Khunti. For many, the rains mark the beginning of a new agricultural cycle and the end of uncertainty.

“We were worried about the delay. The soil was dry, and we couldn’t begin any land preparation. This rain has lifted our hopes,” said Mangal Tudu, a farmer from Patamda in East Singhbhum district. “We can now start preparing our fields for paddy cultivation.”

Kharif crops such as paddy, maize, pulses, and oilseeds rely heavily on early monsoon rains. A timely onset not only ensures better germination but also helps recharge groundwater levels and reservoirs.

The downpour also brought temporary respite to urban areas suffering from heat, dust, and poor air quality. In Jamshedpur, early showers led to a noticeable dip in temperature and improvement in ambient conditions.

“It’s a welcome relief. The last few weeks were unbearable, especially for schoolchildren and the elderly,” said Renu Mishra, a resident of Sakchi. “The rain has cooled down the city considerably.”

Intermittent rainfall will continue across Jharkhand throughout the week. Maximum temperatures will remain 3 to 5 degrees lower than the seasonal average. Humidity levels are expected to rise, but improved air quality and dust suppression will offset some of the discomfort.

IMD has advised farmers to begin land preparation and initial sowing operations but urged caution in low-lying areas where waterlogging may occur after heavy showers.

District administrations have been instructed to remain vigilant in flood-prone and landslide-sensitive zones, especially in the hilly terrains of Kolhan and Santhal Pargana. Rural development and agriculture officers have also been directed to coordinate closely with panchayats to ensure timely supply of seeds, fertilizers, and diesel for irrigation pumps.

“We are on alert. All block and panchayat-level officials have been activated to assist farmers and monitor water levels,” said an official from the East Singhbhum District Agriculture Department.
