Monsoon continues to drench Jharkhand, surplus rainfall at 43%

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is poised for continued monsoon activity over the coming days, with the meteorological department forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across various parts of the state.

On Friday, heavy rainfall lashed the north-eastern regions of Jharkhand, while thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph were observed at isolated locations.

According to the forecast, similar weather conditions are expected to prevail through August 9 and 10, with thunderstorm activity continuing into August 11. The monsoon trough at mean sea level currently stretches from Ferozepur to Chandigarh and runs east-southeastward along the Himalayan foothills, extending all the way to northeast Arunachal Pradesh.

Adding to the active monsoon scenario, an upper-air cyclonic circulation between 3.1 and 5.8 km over central Bangladesh, tilting southwestward with height, is further intensifying weather activity in the region.

Monsoon conditions remained normal across Jharkhand in the past 24 hours, with light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms reported in most areas. However, certain pockets experienced heavier showers, with Dumuria in West Singhbhum recording the highest at 75.2 mm.

Despite the turbulent skies, temperatures remained relatively high, with Seraikela registering the state’s maximum temperature of 35.4°C on Thursday.

Rainfall data highlights a significant surplus in the state’s monsoon performance. Against a normal seasonal rainfall of 581 mm, Jharkhand has already received 830 mm — a surplus of 43 per cent. Authorities are advising residents, especially in vulnerable areas, to stay alert as wet conditions persist.
