Jamshedpur : Celebrations on India’s win over Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy turned sour in the city as two policemen were injured as a frenzied mob resorted to stone-pelting at police near the Mohammedan Line in Sakchipast midnight.
As Team India won the match the fans came out on streets and started celebrating. A group of bike-borne youths had taken out a procession and shouted slogans infavour of Indian cricket team. Suddenly some youths started pelting stones on the fans.
Those injured were identified as Ranjit Kumar, a driver associated with the Sakchipolice station and Rajesh Kumar Ravi, the body-guard of Sakchipolice station OC. Both had sustained head injuries and were administered first-aid at the Tata Main Hospital.
The bikers shouted slogans infavour of India while passing through the Mohammedan Line , a minority community dominated locality. As the procession was proceeding, a section of youths from the Mohammedan Line appeared on the road and started opposing.
As there was a tussle between the fans and the Mohammedan Line youths, the police intervened and forced the fans to disperse. But a section of the crowd had started pelting stones at the police who were still busy in calming down the situation.
In the meantime, superintendent of police (city) Prashant Anand reached the spot and tried to disperse the crowd. Anandalso ordered for additional force and keeping the situation in view he deployed a police force near the Mohammedan Line which was still camping there.
One of the residents of Mohammedan Line claimed ” The oppose started when the bikers were shouting comments like “Jai Sri Ram” which had nothing to do with the India-Pakistan match.
Therefore some people in the area had reacted.”
Senior SP, Anoop T Mathew said they had sensed trouble in certain sensitive pockets over match result. “We alerted all police stations in advance and asked them to maintain vigil to check any untoward incident. The situation is normal in Sakchi” said Mathew.
