Mishap at Nuvoco’s Jojobera cement plant: Company agrees to give job to victim�s wife

Jamshedpur, Sept. 3: Nuvoco Vistas Corporation Ltd (formerly Lafarge) at Jojobera today agreed to provide job to wife of mishap victim, who died on Sunday. The company settled the matter following which the relatives allowed the police to take the body for the post-mortem.

Thirty-year-old contractor�s worker died after being buried under cement at the premises of Nuvoco Vistas Corporation Ltd (formerly Lafarge) at Jojobera on the outskirts of the city under Govindpurpolice station area late last evening.Four other workers were injured in the incident, but two of them were released after first-aid where as two others were admitted at the Tata Main Hospital.

The victim was identified as GovindGope, a resident of Mahatodihvillage inGovindpur, whereas the injured who have been admitted at the Tata Main Hospital were identified as S Pramanik (28) and SambhuGope (29), also residents of the same village.

A group of five contract workers were engaged for silo cleaning at the company’s cement yard. While they were removing the lump of cement suddenly a big chunk of cement caved in and fell on the workers.

A company official said the cement chunk fell and Govind was buried under it, but four others managed to escape, but still two of them were partially buried.
‘Two of the workers who escaped with minor injries screamed for help, leading other workers to rush to the spot. They all rescued Govind from the heap of cement and rushed him to Tata Main Hospital where he was declared as brought dead.

A senior official of the company confirmed about the mishap in which one worker was killed and two others injured. He said the condition of the two injured workers was stable.

” We are really concerned of the mishap. Silo cleaning is a regular activity at the company. Unfortunately, the mishap took place. We are looking into concerns of the victim’s family,” said the official requesting anonymity.

A press communique from Nuvoco Vistas Corp. Ltd. (formerly Lafarge India Ltd) said: � An accident took place in our plant during a silo cleaning activity. While we regret what has happened; our current focus is on extending all support to those affected. We will be conducting an inquiry into this unfortunate incident to ensure that it doesn’t occur in the future�.

Govind is survived by his widow and two minor sons who read in a government-run school at Govindpur. Relatives and family friends had protested the death of Govind and had demanded that the company management to provide employment to the victim’s widow.

OC, Govindpurpolice station, MahendraKarmali said the relatives and friends of the mishap victim Govind had demanded a service for his widow, a demand which the company management have accepted.
