Jamshedpur: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College students went on rampage on Tuesday evening at Dimna Road, vandalizing several shops on the main road near Hill View Colony.
Several students allegedly teased local women and girls in Hill View Colony in the evening and fell out with the local residents who protested their moves. They took to the streets thereafter and broke into several shops, vandalizing property for several hours, sources said.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP), East Singhbhum, Amol Venukant Homkar reached the scene along with SP (city) Kartik S and other senior police officials to control the situation. Police charged on the mob of students with canes to disperse them. Several students were detained by the police for questioning.
Police said culprits will be arrested and strict action will be taken against them for eveteasing and disruption of public tranquility.
Sources said the incident was triggered by alleged eve-teasing by some of the medical students in Hill View Colony. When local people drove away the students, they went on rampage on the main road.
This is not the first time when such an incident has taken place in the locality. A few years back, MGM students had gone on similar rampage in the area at Dimna Road following a dispute with local residents. They had assaulted several persons and vandalized people on the road.
Later, the issue was somehow settled with the intervention of the college authorities and administrative officials.
