Jamshedpur: The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and Hospital is facing a major administrative and healthcare crisis following the mass resignation of 23 junior doctors within a single month. This sudden wave of exits has not only threatened to cripple the hospital’s daily operations but has also sparked a debate over the facility’s internal monitoring systems.
The resignations reportedly followed a recent crackdown by MGM management on workplace discipline. Sources indicate that after the hospital implemented a stricter monitoring mechanism for attendance, punctuality, and shift responsibilities, several junior doctors who were frequently absent found themselves under intense scrutiny. As the management began seeking formal explanations and fixing accountability, a majority of these doctors chose to submit their resignations.
While management attributes the exits to the pressure of strict monitoring, some doctors have cited higher studies and career advancement as their reasons for leaving. Regardless of the motivation, the sheer number of resignations across multiple critical departments is expected to severely impact patient care.
Management’s Stance on Discipline
For a long time, MGM had been receiving complaints regarding lapses in duty discipline. Amidst a growing patient load and limited resources, the frequent absence of doctors was hampering treatment. In response, the administration recently tightened oversight of attendance registers and shift schedules. When several junior doctors were found consistently absent, the process of issuing notices and seeking show-cause explanations began, eventually leading to this series of resignations.
The hospital administration is now scrambling to find alternative arrangements to ensure that services remain uninterrupted. Senior doctors and existing staff are being reassigned to cover the vacant shifts as a temporary measure.
