MGM Hospital Jamshedpur to enforce tobacco-free policy, Rs 200 fine for violators

Jamshedpur: A strict tobacco-free policy is set to be implemented at the ultra-modern hospital built on the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College campus at Dimna Chowk. Patients and attendants consuming tobacco products like paan and gutkha will be denied entry, with a fine of Rs 200 imposed on violators.

Hospital authorities have completed preparations and official instructions will be issued soon. Upon arrival, patients and their attendants must prove they are not consuming tobacco. Those caught using intoxicants inside the premises will be penalized.

The initiative aims to curb rampant tobacco use in the hospital. Many visitors and even doctors have been found smoking or chewing tobacco, leading to stained walls and unsanitary conditions. “The new hospital has been built very well. In such a situation, it is the responsibility of all of us to keep it clean. Those who come after consuming tobacco will be fined and barred from entry,” said Dr. Jujhar Majhi, Deputy Superintendent of MGM.

To enforce this rule, 30 home guard jawans have been deployed at the hospital, with two stationed at the entrance to monitor incoming patients and visitors. CCTV cameras will also be installed across the premises for strict surveillance. Suspicious individuals may be asked to open their mouths or have their pockets checked. Anyone found with narcotics will face direct action.

This model has already been successfully implemented at Sadar Hospital in Parsudih. “In Sadar Hospital, people who consume tobacco are not only checked but also fined. Now this practice will be implemented in all CHCs and PHCs of East Singhbhum district,” said Dr. Sahir Pal, Civil Surgeon.

Authorities plan to extend the initiative to all Community Health Centers (CHCs) and Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in the district to maintain hospital cleanliness round the clock.
