Jamshedpur: MGM Hospital has set up a dedicated ward in the PG building to treat patients suffering from the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). This ward, located on the third floor, is equipped with an oxygen pipeline and is isolated from other hospital facilities.
Preparations were initiated on instructions from higher authorities. MGM Superintendent Dr Shikha Rani convened a meeting with departmental heads to discuss preventive measures and treatment readiness. She emphasized the need for staff to wear masks, use sanitizers, and maintain distance from patients exhibiting cold and cough symptoms.
“Department heads suggested setting up a ward equipped with oxygen and ensuring the availability of masks, gloves, and sanitizers,” said Dr Rani.
Dr Balram Jha, head of the medicine department, reassured that the virus is not dangerous, describing it as a viral cold and cough disease that may cause prolonged coughing. “So far, no cases have been reported at MGM. However, the ICMR has sent kits, and we have been instructed to test five patients weekly and send reports,” he added.
Meanwhile, rising concerns fuelled by social media rumours and videos have led to a surge in demand for sanitizers and masks. Local shopkeeper Raju Mahato noted, “Many people are coming to buy sanitizers and masks. We’ve stocked up to meet the demand.”
