Jamshedpur, Jan 2: MGM Hospital, the largest government medical facility in Kolhan, continues to grapple with a critical shortage of medical staff. With the hospital being relocated to a new building with 750 beds, the situation has become even more dire. The facility, which currently operates with only 178 doctors, has 131 vacant posts, leaving patients with limited access to essential care.
The hospital has a total of 309 approved posts for various medical positions, including professors, associate professors, and junior and senior residents. However, only 178 doctors are currently serving at the hospital. The shortage is especially concerning in the medical college wing of MGM, where there is a severe lack of faculty.
“Every department faces a shortage of professors,” said Dr. Nakul Chaudhary, Deputy Superintendent of MGM Hospital. “Currently, there are only 24 professors in total, against an approved 34 posts. Similarly, we only have 10 associate professors, whereas 40 are needed, and we lack professors in five departments altogether.”
The faculty members at MGM Medical College are burdened with dual responsibilities. They not only teach medical students but also provide patient care, which has increased the strain on the available doctors. “The department has written to higher authorities to address the staffing shortage. In the interim, we’ve requested the recruitment of external doctors to ensure that patients don’t face undue difficulty,” Dr. Chaudhary added.
