Met department forecasts of scattered rain in Kolhan

Jamshedpur, July 24: The meteorological department has issued forecast of scattered rain over Kolhan in the week ahead, raising fears of increasing rain deficit.

“After studies we find no trace of strong weather system in chart analysis and radar study which can trigger a good spell of rain in the next three to four days. Scattered rainfall is expected over Jharkhand which might raise the deficit figure,” said A. K. Sen, director of the Patna Meteorological Centre. †

IMD’s Ranchi meteorological centre said that south west monsoon is expected to remain normal over Jharkhand in the next few days.

ďWe have found that the monsoon trough which had drifted towards the foothills of Himalayas was restored on Saturday.

Today the axis of monsoon trough shifted towards the south. It was passing through Rajnandgaon in Chhatisgarh †and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh extending up to the east central Bay of Bengal,” said D. G. Hedau, a senior official of Ranchi Meteorological Centre adding that chart analysis suggested scattered rain over Jharkhand.

However, the senior Met department official did not rule out possibility of thunder and rain in those districts located in higher altitudes due to changes in local weather condition.

In the past 24 hours only a few IMD observatories including Jamshedpur and Ranchi reported rainfall. Jamshedpur recorded over 103 mm of rain during the last 24-hours due to the impact of a strong cyclonic circulation over north Andhra Pradesh and southern Chhattisgarh.

Ranchi experienced about 12 mm of rain while Daltonganj received 6.8 mm.

Farming in Jharkhand is completely dependent on monsoon because of lack of irrigation facility and farmers’ inclination for cultivation of paddy which requires adequate rainfall.

Advising the farmers to stop transplanting paddy after August 10, an official said that in case they continue to go for transplantation till August 15, they must put more than one sidling and reduce the quantity of fertilizer.
