Mercury shots up to 40 degree in Jamshedpur, dry winds to prevail

Jamshedpur, April 20: The mercury crossed 40 degree celsius and above in southern and north-western Jharkhand.

Some places in southern and northern Jharkhand including Jamshedpur and Daltonganj also witnessed loo today. Loo is a hot and dry wind which usually blows in the plains of Chhotanagpur plateau region during this time of the season.

“The state is in the grip of dry westerly winds, which are pushing up day temperatures. The rising trend of temperature is likely to continue for the next 24-hours ,” said an official.

Officials at Met office, which monitors the weather condition in Jharkhand said that the dry spell is likely to be continued. The wait for rains has been extended. The officials added that Chhotanagpur plateau regions were devoid of North-westerly winds this year. The North-westerly winds usually originate from Chhotanagpur plateau and brings rain. However, this year so far the region has been deprived of such resulting in steady rise in the maximum temperature.

We are not used to living under such heat conditions. It is perhaps for the first time that we witnessed a harsh April this season. There was a time when the mercury crossed 35 or 36, but the weather was cooled with rain showers in evening. The trends have changed. We have no choice but to reel under soaring mercury, said a resident.

The senior weatherman though asserted that heat waves would continue in the region and every precaution should be taken in this regard. The only positive at this point of time is that mercury that was on the rise for the last couple of days is gradually subsidizing and in the next four five days the temperature will ether move down and remain constant, noted the weather professional.

The steel city for last ten days is boiling under the rising temperature coupled with heat waves the people confine to their house during the punishing five hours starting as early as 10 in the morning.
