Mercury in Jamshedpur drops to 9.7 degrees Celsius, IMD predicts rise in minimum temperatures across Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: Residents, who have been battling plummeting temperatures over the past few days, can expect some respite as the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi Meteorological Centre predicts a gradual rise in minimum temperatures. A bulletin released today forecasts a 2–4 degrees Celsius increase in the minimum temperature over the next two to three days.

This warming trend is attributed to the influence of a Western Disturbance passing through northern India, which has led to the formation of clouds over the region. According to weather experts, the cloudy skies are expected to act as an insulating layer, preventing heat from escaping and thus raising nighttime temperatures.

Despite the expected relief, chilly conditions persist across the state. Ranchi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.9 degrees Celsius today, while Jamshedpur reported a reading of 9.7 degrees Celsius.

Among the districts, Lohardaga experienced the state’s lowest temperature, with the mercury dipping to 6 degrees Celsius while minimum temperature in Namkum area of Ranchi recorded 5 degrees celsius. Daltonganj, the Palamu district headquarters, recorded 7.8 degrees Celsius, while Bokaro registered 9.1 degrees. Eastern Jharkhand towns such as Deoghar and Jamtara also experienced cold nights, recording minimum temperatures of 10.2 degrees Celsius each.

In addition to the temperature update, the Ranchi Met Centre issued an advisory for shallow to moderate fog in isolated pockets of the state over the next two days. This could impact visibility, particularly during early mornings and late evenings, posing challenges for commuters and travelers.

Meteorologists noted that the prevailing northwesterly winds have been a significant factor in maintaining the recent cold wave conditions. These dry and cold winds, sweeping across the state, were instrumental in pulling down temperatures to the current levels. However, the anticipated shift in weather patterns is expected to ease the cold spell temporarily.

The rise in minimum temperatures will provide relief to residents, especially those in rural and semi-urban areas with limited access to heating. The state’s farmers, who rely heavily on weather conditions for their crops, will also benefit from the milder temperatures and reduced frost risks.

“While the temporary rise in minimum temperatures offers a reprieve, Jharkhand’s residents are advised to remain cautious and prepared for fluctuating weather patterns. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged the public to stay updated with the latest advisories,” said an official.
