Jamshedpur, July 27: Road accidents in Jamshedpur are ever increasing and is one of the main reason behind death, with lack of infrastructure available and vehicles number growing with every passing day it has become really difficult for the daily commuters to ride on the busy streets of the city and not a single day passes when we not hear about a road mishap.
Steel city is still suffering a lack of properly established and coordinated trauma and ambulance services and Jamshedpurains are badly in need of medical attention on the road and services that can come to the quick aid of road traffic accident victims. If all goes well Medica Jamshedpur (Kantilal Gandhi Memorial Hospital) with the joint project of Jamshedpur Police will start the free of cost ambulance service for road victims by 15th August or before the Durga Puja begins.
Under the project, Jarma (Jamshedpur Accident Rescue and Medical Attention) that aims to provide 24 hours trauma care service to the people of the city trained personnel on ambulances will assess the condition of those in need of help, provide basic treatment and ferry them to a hospital which is near to the site of accident with the facilities needed to take care of them.
We will be starting the free ambulance services by August 15 or most probably before the Durga Puja as our personnel are undergoing training at Kolkata. The service will be first of its kind in Jharkhand as we are successfully operating it in Kolkata, at first 6 ambulances will be placed at strategic locations in the Steel city to ferry trauma victims to the nearest hospitals, said Dr. NK Das, Director, Medica Jamshedpur.
Dr. Das further informed that the ambulances will be manned by skilled and highly-trained Paramedical Staff, as the thrust is on taking the patients to hospital as quickly as possible, how the victim is lifted up and positioned is also vital. This is the reason training is being imparted to the personnels for all possible scenarios before they join the fleet.
We have set up Central Command Centre were all calls for accident-help will have to be made to the Medica Command Centre, the toll free number will be launched as the services kick off. Personnel there will alert the ambulance stationed nearest to the spot and guide it to the hospital with the facilities to treat the accident victim(s), said Dr. NK Das.
In accident cases, there is the golden hour (the first hour after the accident) which is very vital as victims are in pain and often there is heavy blood loss, Dr. Das added.
Talking about the news facilities added to Medica Jamshedpur (KGMH) , Dr. Fateh Bahadur Singh HOD Neurosciences said, brain and spine microscopic neurological surgery is now possible at the hospital. The main advantage is that now city residents will not have to move to other cities and the surgery cost will be comparatively low. Now we also have Neuro ICU of 8 beds apart from the common Intensive care unit.
We will be starting MRI services in the next two months while CT Scan service will be operational within one month. Fully fledged Trauma centre is need of the hour for Jamshedpur and we are hoping to start the 24 hour centre as CT scan becomes operational and most probably before the Durga Puja ,said Dr. Singh.
We have the best neurosurgical unit of the region and so far we have successfully conducted more than 20 operations. A stroke care unit is also available in the hospital and with the changing technology now age limiting factor doesnt matter but facility limiting factor does matter a lot while conducting surgeries, added Dr. Singh.
Talking about the ambulance service Dr. Singh said, it is a grand move and we will try our level best to kick-start the trauma care facility for road accident victims as soon as possible.
