Jamshedpur, April 7: A three-member Medical Council of India (MCI) team carried surprise inspection of state-owned MGM Medical College and Hospital on Friday.
On a two-day tour the team found that nothing has been done to improve the manpower strength both at clinical (hospital) and academics (at the college) level required for running of a medical college with 100 seats capacity.
“I cannot divulge my findings but we are here to conduct the inspection of the medical college hospital, and will submit my report to the MCI shortly,” said an MCI official.
In June 2014, the MCI teams after inspecting MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur had recommended for reducing of seats at the medical cradle. It had slashed 50 seats from its 100 seats for MGM Medical College and Hospital.
Following this Jharkhand High Court came to the students’ help and stated that the slashed seats in August after the state government promised to hire new faculty members and upgrade the colleges according to MCI specifications within 10 months.
Sources informed that the MCI team expressed dissatisfaction to the MGM Medical College and Hospital superintendent and the college principal. about lack of professors and associate professors in almost all of its departments.
We cannot reveal about our visit but yes there is lack of professors in departments like medicine, skin, surgery and paediatric. There is shortage in even nursing and paramedic strength, said the team member to the MGM superintendent. The team also frowned over lack of trained operators for X-ray machines, and endoscopic machines.
The team members later in the evening, visited each of the departments at the medical college and saw the condition of infrastructure for the students and faculties at the college in Dimna.
It may be mentioned that State Government governed Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital, is an Indian medical school established in 1964. It is situated in the outskirts of Jamshedpur near Dimna.
The students are admitted through an All India pre medical test CBSE PMT held by CBSE and Jharkhand and Bihar states’ combined entrance tests. The college’s hospital is located in Sakchi.
