Jamshedpur: The head of SCM and Societies, Tata Steel, Sanjay Mohan, has informed East Singhbhum district administration that the company has got a mass insurance of steel city residents done against any future industrial disaster, sources said.
In the reply handed to the district administration on 24th April last, Mohan said the insurance has been done for the financial year 2018-19 by ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company. Tata Steel has paid Rs 20 crore as two separate premium amounts. Under one premium, Rs 15 crore has been paid for one year while in the other Rs 5 crore has been paid, sources said.
City-based social activist Jawahar Lal Sharma had raised the insurance issue several years ago. He had filed an RTI petition seeking to know whether the company had got the mass insurance done under Public Liability Act 1991 or not.
The law was passed after the Bhopal gas tragedy of 2nd December 1984. Many people were killed in the incident. Under the Act, companies using chemicals or dangerous gases should compulsorily get the people under its vicinity insured for any industrial disaster.
