Chaibasa, Aug 9: A suspected Maoist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Gudri police station area of West Singhbhum district on Friday, a police officer said.
The encounter took place in Thalkobeda forest bordering Khunti district when a team of CRPF and district police launched a joint operation in the area, West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Inderjeet Mahatha said.
The security forces had received a tip off about the movement of Maoists in the area. No sooner did they reach the forest, the Maoists opened fire at the security forces and in the retaliatory firing that followed, one of them was killed, the SP said.
Police recovered a cache of arms and ammunition and several mobile phones from the encounter scene, said the SP.
A search operation is on in and around the forest area to track down the fleeing Maoists, police said.
Maoists had recently gunned down five
policemen in Kukdu Haat of Seraikela-Kharsawan. The incident spread panic among
local villagers. In a bid to scotch public fear, cops intensified anti-Maoist
operation in the three districts of Kolhan.
