Jamshedpur, Sep 5: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence (IoE) and Deemed-to-be University, has achieved a historic milestone by securing the 3rd position in the “University” category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2025. This is the first time that a private institution has entered the top three in this category, marking a significant achievement in Indian higher education.
MAHE’s rise to the 3rd rank is attributed to its comprehensive excellence across various parameters, particularly its research output and academic performance. Several of its constituent colleges also performed well in their respective categories, reinforcing the institution’s reputation for quality education.
The NIRF rankings, released annually by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, evaluate institutions based on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception. MAHE’s consistent growth across all these metrics has contributed to its top ranking.
Established in 1953 with India’s first self-financing medical college, MAHE evolved into a Deemed-to-be University in 1993. Over the years, it has grown into a premier institution with multiple campuses, offering diverse programs across medicine, engineering, humanities, management, and allied health sciences.
One of its key constituent institutions is Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC) in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, established in 2020 through a unique private-private partnership between MAHE and Tata Steel. Recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), MTMC offers an MBBS program with an annual intake of 150 students. Clinical training is conducted at Tata Main Hospital (TMH), which serves a large patient base, giving students extensive hands-on exposure.
Spread across a 20-acre modern campus in Baridih, MTMC is equipped with digital classrooms, advanced simulation labs, an e-library, and Wi-Fi-enabled hostels. The curriculum emphasizes case-based learning, early clinical exposure, and mentorship, integrating theory with practical experience. The college also provides sports facilities and a supportive academic environment to encourage holistic development.
MTMC offers scholarships such as Kalam-Pai, Free Ship, and Scholars Scholarships, which include full fee waivers and stipends for eligible students based on NEET All India Rank (AIR) merit. Admissions to the MBBS program are conducted through NEET-UG merit, via Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) Deemed University Counselling for all India students and JCECEB Counselling for Jharkhand domicile students.
With a vision to produce skilled, ethical, and community-oriented doctors, MTMC is playing a vital role in strengthening healthcare delivery and medical education in Jharkhand and beyond.
