Jamshedpur, Dec 23: A meeting was convened at the Mango Municipal Corporation office on Monday to discuss the ongoing issues with the drinking water supply system in the area. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Suresh Prasad Yadav, aimed to ensure the smooth functioning of the Mango drinking water project, which had been facing operational challenges despite an investment of over Rs 100 crore. Key participants included Assistant Engineer of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, Md. Arif Ansari, Junior Engineer Ashutosh Pathak, and Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy, who joined the meeting online due to health reasons.
During the meeting, MLA Saryu Roy emphasized that the purpose of the discussion was not to criticize but to work collaboratively to resolve the issues hindering the water supply in Mango. “This meeting is not to find fault but to understand why the Mango drinking water project, which was built with a significant investment, is not providing water to all areas as intended,” Roy stated. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the Municipal Corporation and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation to resolve the issues.
Roy suggested a thorough review of several critical aspects of the water supply system. These included the current status of the pumps installed to draw raw water from the river, the condition of water treatment plants, and the operational status of structures designed to fill tanks and distribute water to households. “We need to understand the capacity and status of all these structures to identify areas needing improvement,” Roy said.
The MLA was informed that one of the five motor pumps installed to draw water from the river was consistently out of order, and there was no reserve pump available. Roy directed the Assistant Engineer to prepare an estimate for replacing the faulty motor pump. Furthermore, it was revealed that one of the motors at the water treatment plant was completely damaged, along with a 630 KVA transformer. Roy instructed the Assistant Engineer to repair the motor and for the Deputy Municipal Commissioner to liaise with the Electricity Department to replace the transformer.
Roy also highlighted issues in the six zones where the water supply system was divided. “Each zone has a damaged motor pump, and one motor pump in four zones is completely non-functional,” he noted, urging immediate action to buy reserve motor pumps for all zones.
Regarding the newly constructed Jal Minar in the Baliguma area, Roy was informed that the work of laying the clear water rising pipe had not been completed. “Given the growing population, we must consider installing a new water treatment plant here,” he suggested. The MLA also received updates on the Jal Minar in Prithvi Park, near Payal Cinema, which is expected to be operational soon, helping resolve water issues in several areas under Zone 5.
The meeting concluded with the decision to prioritize the operationalization of the existing Jal Minars before discussing the installation of a new water treatment plant.
