Jamshedpur :Mango residents under the banner of Mango Vikas Samity (a social outfit) has demanded free water connections under Mango water project.
Onkarnath Singh senior functionary of the samity said that till now the Mango water project is witnessing water leakage at different points. Roads damaged in course of laying of pipe have not been repaired.
Several areas have been excluded in the project (around 30 percent). We want the administration and the government to ensure that all these irregularities are corrected before launch of the project.
So far, 3185 new connections have been taken as part of the water project and out of the old connections (around 6,000) only 225 have applied for new connections.
He said that Mango Notified Area Committee is asking locals to clear pending water bills for availing new connections.
The old dues are about Rs 4. 25 crores. Most of the people are not in a position to pay the outstanding bills. We want the state government to waive the outstanding bills while giving new connections.
The Mango project of drinking water and sanitation department is being executed by Jusco, a wholly owned Tata Steel subsidiary, is adding five water towers in addition to an existing one, a new modernized water treatment plant and an intake reservoir on the banks of Subernarekha with a capacity to supply 48 million litres of water per
day for next 24 years in the densely populated area.
At present, against a demand for 6 million litres per day, residents of Mango get less than 2 million litres from the existing water tower.
The project was mentioned in the 2005-06 budget with an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore. The foundation stone was laid by then Governor K Shankarnarayan in 2009.
Its earlier scheduled deadline was August 2011.New pipelines have been laid along a stretch of nearly 148km in Mango and will see distribution from the six water towers at Sankosai, Gandhi Maidan, Old Purulia Road, Pardih (near Big Bazaar), MGM Medical College and Jawaharnagar.
