Malaria Spread on Decline; 125 Jamshedpur MGM Doctors Screen 12k People in 4 Blocks

JAMSHEDPUR: A team of 125 doctors from MGM Medical College and Hospital spearheaded an intensive malaria screening drive across Potka, Musabani, Dumaria, and Ghatshila blocks from June 29 to July 3. During the five-day campaign, the medical teams tested suspected patients, initiated immediate treatment, and educated villagers on preventive measures.

This massive testing and prompt treatment strategy has already successfully lowered the district’s malaria positivity rate, proving that the local control measures are delivering encouraging results. Following directives from Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Ranjan to curb the outbreak, the Health Department deployed these additional medical teams, stocked essential medicines, and launched door-to-door surveys in high-risk villages.

Hospital Admissions and Recovery Status

Official figures reveal the current hospital load and patient status across the district:

  • Admissions: Sadar Hospital admitted 59 malaria patients in June and another 14 in the first few days of July.
  • Recoveries: Out of the 73 total patients, 31 have recovered and returned home.
  • Current Care: 39 patients are currently under stable condition at the hospital, while doctors referred three patients for advanced medical care.
  • Casualties: Officials confirmed four malaria-related deaths—one at a private hospital and three at MGM Hospital.

The geographical breakdown of patients admitted to Sadar Hospital includes 23 from Potka, 10 from the Golmuri-cum-Jugsalai block, four from Dumaria, and two from Musabani.

Community-Level Surveillance Scale-Up

17,741 Households Covered: Sahiya workers are driving the community surveillance by conducting door-to-door surveys in malaria-affected villages across the four blocks.

To bolster these efforts, authorities are running awareness campaigns using street plays, banners, posters, hoardings, and handbills to educate residents about mosquito control, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.

Simultaneously, Health Department teams launched a special search drive across 54 villages bordering the Potka block in Dumaria, Musabani, and Golmuri-cum-Jugsalai. These teams are actively identifying fever patients, testing them for malaria, and administering medicines on the spot.

Massive Testing Drive Identifies 840 Cases

The Health Department has aggressively expanded the district’s malaria testing capacity to catch infections at an early stage. So far, teams have screened 12,872 people, with 840 testing positive. Health officials attribute the recent drop in the positivity rate to this rapid, widespread testing intervention.

Civil Surgeon Dismisses “Brain Malaria” Rumors

Civil Surgeon Dr. Sahir Pal clarified that the region has not detected any cases of cerebral malaria (commonly referred to by the public as “brain malaria”). He explained that Cerebral Malaria is a severe complication caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, which only develops if the primary infection goes untreated.

Dr. Pal urged residents experiencing persistent fever, chills, severe headache, vomiting, unconsciousness, or confusion to visit the nearest government health center immediately, emphasizing that timely diagnosis prevents serious complications.
