Main accused in the Gupta Hotel owner fatal attack arrested

Jamshedpur, July 22: Acting on a tip off, Seraikela-Kharsawan police on Friday arrested the main accused in the fatal attack on Ramsundar Gupta (45), owner of the Gupta Hotel in NIT Campus on 23 February.

The police team raided the Bantanagar Water Tank ground and arrested Vikas Sardar (23), resident of Ichapur under RIT police station. The culprit accepted the crime and named four of his friends allegedly involved in the case.

He named Dinesh Mahato, Vijay Mandal, Mangal Tudu alias Mangal Majhi and Raju Nayak alias Samir Tudu alias Daftu. The weapon used in the crime has been recovered by the police, said SP Inderjeet Mahatha.

Significantly, the owner of a campus eatery was shot at and injured on February 23 when there was no student present.

Ramsundar Gupta (45) was attacked by three men on a bike around 2pm. The assailants fired two rounds, but the first missed target. The second bullet hit Gupta on the head.

Gupta Hotel has been doing business at NIT for a quarter of a century. Although not authorised on paper, the budget eatery was never removed from campus because it catered to the needs of students.

Besides tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks, Gupta also rustled up meals at his quaint thatched shop.
