Jamshedpur, Nov 22: In a bid to improve amenities for railway passengers, South Eastern Railway authorities have installed a state-of-the-art automatic coach washing unit at the sick line of Tatanagar railway station for cleaning trains. The washing unit is made of over a dozen equipments for external washing of all train coaches, sources said.

The machine, purchased at the cost of Rs 2.11 crore, does the cleaning work efficiently within 15 minutes, a job which took over a dozen railway employees six hours earlier. The exteriors of trains are washed with pre washer, washer, water sprayer and drier among other equipments, sources said.

Sources said the new washing unit is saving 80 per cent water. The used water is being recycled for further use. Due to less time in preparing each train, the Railway is now finding it easier to ensure timely departure of trains.

According to Manish Kumar Pathak, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM), Chakradharpur Rail Division, “Tatanagar station has been given the status of a model station. It is the top earner in terms of revenue in the entire division. Keeping this in mind, we are enhancing passenger amenities here. The new coach washing unit is an effort in this direction and meant for the benefit of passengers.”
