Jamshedpur, July 11: Loyola School, Telco, organized a health awareness session for students of Classes 9 and 10, focusing on the prevention of Type 2 diabetes and other lifestyle-related disorders. The initiative aimed to sensitize students to the increasing health challenges faced by today’s youth.

The session featured Dr. Rashid Iqbal, Senior Resident at MGM Medical College, Jamshedpur, as the guest speaker. The program began with a prayer and a warm welcome, followed by a symbolic presentation of a sapling to Dr. Iqbal by Principal Charanjeet Ohson, reflecting the school’s dedication to both health and environmental consciousness.

Dr. Iqbal shed light on the growing prevalence of diabetes among young people, citing unhealthy dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and poor lifestyle choices as major contributing factors. He introduced the concept of MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young), a hereditary form of diabetes seen in individuals under the age of 25.

He pointed out that, on average, students today weighed around 5 kg more than those from a decade ago which was an alarming shift driven by sedentary routines and the excessive intake of processed foods. Emphasizing the need for early prevention, Dr. Iqbal stressed the importance of regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, mental wellness, and periodic health checkups, including tests like HbA1c and glucose levels.

The session concluded with an inspiring message from Dr. Iqbal, encouraging students to embrace a balanced lifestyle through yoga, healthy eating, and mindful living to prevent chronic diseases.

The event served as both an eye-opener and a call to action, empowering students to make informed choices for a healthier and more sustainable future. (w/gsd)
