Ranchi, Nov 6: Jharkhand has witnessed a steady increase in the number of eligible voters in each assembly election. However, despite this rise, voter participation remains a concern. Historical data reveals a clear pattern: when voter turnout is low, the resulting government tends to be unstable, with frequent changes in leadership. In contrast, higher voter participation has been associated with stable governments that last a full term.According to data from the last four elections, voter turnout has consistently fallen short. In 2005, only 57.03% of eligible voters cast their ballots, leaving 76,34,709 voters not participating. Similarly, in 2009, despite a slight increase in voter turnout to 56.96%, a large portion of the electorate (77,66,898) remained inactive. In the 2014 elections, the turnout rose to 66.42%, but still, 70,01,412 voters did not vote. The 2019 election saw a turnout of 65.18%, with 80,27,548 voters opting not to participate. The data suggests that voter apathy could play a significant role in shaping the political landscape of the state. With fewer voters engaging in the electoral process, the state has faced political instability, including frequent changes in leadership. A higher voter turnout could potentially lead to a more stable government, as seen in other instances of increased electoral participation.
