Lions to hold workshop for high school teachers

Jamshedpur: Lions Clubs International is going to conduct three days’ Teachers Training Workshop on Lions Quest: Skills for Adolescence (SFA) for high schools teachers of Jamshedpur from 11- 13 April at Nature Education Centre, Tata zoo with Ratna Choudhary, senior trainer of Lions Quest from New Delhi as the resource person.

This will be the 17th such workshop in Jamshedpur which is generally known as Lions Quest City of India amongst Lions Fraternity. The curriculum has been implemented in many high schools of Jamshedpur with encouraging results.

Jamshedpur which witnesses a high rate of suicide and road fatality amongst adolescents has a silver lining. Most of the students who have gone through the Skills for Adolescence curriculum have been reported to have benefitted a lot from the training. They have turned out to be matured, are able to resist temptations, can proudly say no to all kinds of negative temptation and also are able to handle peer pressure quite common in their age group, Lions members said.

The SFA programmes are taught in ten languages in the country covering English, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi. It has the recommendation of UNICEF, UNESCO and WHO as a part of the school curriculum to impart VALUES to the students are currently being implemented in 73 countries of the world. All the South Asian Countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Kenya have implemented this programme with the assistance of Lions Quest in India Foundation. India was the first Asian country to introduce this programme in 1992. This has also been successfully adopted by several NGO�s for the students in non-school set up.

The Skills taught in SFA programme focusses on building self discipline, responsibility and self confidence, communicating effectively and co-operating with others, managing attitudes and emotions, strengthening positive relationship with family and peers, learning/developing skills in solving problems and making healthy decisions, resisting negative peer pressure and drug use, thinking critically, settings goals and providing services to others.

Further, students are also involved in service learning. The values reinforced by the programme lays emphasis on self discipline, healthy life, respect for others, kindness, responsibility, honesty & courage, commitment to family and service.

The workshop is limited to thirty teachers only and is coordinated by Lion Rajnish Kumar, Second vice district governor (elect) of Lions Clubs International.
