Kolhan University vocational courses under scanner

Jamshedpur : Following a stir launched by the students of Jamshedpur Women�s College, the vocational courses like Mass communication, Business Management, Clinical Nutrition, Information Technology and many other such courses are under scanner of Kolhan University now.

As the popularity of vocational courses increase, almost all the city colleges have started offering various such courses. Most common vocational courses which are available in all colleges are computer applications, and information technology.

The university has asked constituent colleges to only continue the course if there are minimum 30 students for a particular course in the college. They have also asked colleges to furnish proper details to students.

It may be mentioned that students of BBA (Bachelors in Business Administration) and BCA ( Bachelors of Computer Application) had recently protested over the degree row at Jamshedpur Women�s College, the vice-chancellor of Kolhan University, R P P Singh met the students and clarified the university�s stand on Wednesday.

However, after heated arguments and discussions, students of the Jamshedpur Women’s College agreed to accept a B.Com in Business Administration degree and not a BBA degree by the university.

The students of BBA and BCA have been protesting about the irregularities in prospectus for the past one week. The students went to the university office and also staged a dharna in front of the college gate. Their complaint was that students of BBA would get a BCom degree instead of BBA. They complained that they feel cheated.

�It is a matter of great concern that the students are paying Rupees seven to eight thousands over each course per year but are not receiving its worth. There have been reports of absence of teachers during classes and mismanagement of the vocational courses. Complains run from city as well as rural colleges. I have asked the principals and course co-ordinators concerned to co-operate with the team,� noted an official.

A number of courses have been started in the constituent and affiliated colleges of the university. The official said that the Government is paying teachers but they need to be more accountable.

Meanwhile there are colleges who are running a number of most sought after courses. The response has also been very good. Courses offered by Jamshedpur Women�s College like MBA (two year full time programme), Communicative English( one year) Graduation in Biotechnology ( three year) are much sought after by a sizeable chunk of students who want to hone their soft skills in different areas.

Jamshedpur Women�s College offers about 11 vocational courses ranging including BSC (IT), BCA, and several add one course like Banking, Web Designing, etc. The best part of these courses is that students get Bachelor�s degree after completion.

Karim City College, another city-based premier college, has number of professional courses in store like Mass Communication and Video Production, Informational Technology, Computer Application etc.

�Yes we are receiving number of queries from students who are keen to take admissions in vocation courses. There is a common perception among students that conventional courses cannot land them a job immediately. This has also led to a rush in the vocational field,� said a professor.
