Jamshedpur: Kolhan University has decided to hold college election in September this year. The dates will be announced on September 10 and elections will be held later this month.
The move, which the varsity officials believe will help in better communication, will also weed out the influence of various political parties on campus, whose members often resort to hooliganism under the garb of �students� interest�.
The elections would be for the posts of president, vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary. Any undergraduate or postgraduate student registered with the varsity can contest the polls. Students having 75 per cent of attendance can fight the election. Sources informed that the elections can take place during last week of this month.
The dates of the election will be finalized.
The news of a possible students body being elected has already sent a ripple of excitement among students, who sources claimed had already started listing out problems that needed immediate attention.
The last student outfit poll was held in 2007 under Ranchi University.Students unions like the All Jharkhand Students’ Union (Ajsu) and the Jharkhand\ Chhatra Vikas Morcha (JCVM) are gearing up to discuss the strategies for election campaign.
Officials added that on at least 15 such occasions in this year alone, several KU authorities and principals of many constituent colleges, had to face embarrassment owing to the irresponsible conduct of the student leaders.
The student polls at the varsity were initially scheduled for 2012 but got delayed for a year owing to a number of reasons. “The college elections will be held in accordance with the guidelines of the J M Lyngdoh Committee,” said KU official.
The constituent college principals have been asked to submit voters’ list subsequent to which election dates, structure and mechanism for holding free and fair elections will be announced. The candidates appearing for the college-level election must be an undergraduate and 22 years of age while those contesting at the university-level must be a student of postgraduation and 25 years of age.
Around six years ago, in 2007, students elections were held in the college here, then part of the Ranchi University.
KU runs 25 colleges that include 14 constituent and eight affiliated colleges and two minority colleges. The Jamshedpur Woman’s College is the lone autonomous college of the university.
