New Delhi (IANS): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday shared a video revealing the unprecedented and unparliamentary stand-off that unfolded in the Lok Sabha on February 4. In a scathing critique, Rijiju called out the “most degrading behaviour” of Congress and Opposition MPs, suggesting the House could have turned into a “battleground” had it not been managed with tactical restraint.
The incident occurred when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address. According to the footage and Rijiju’s statement, several women Congress MPs moved toward the Prime Minister’s chair, purportedly intending to obstruct his entry and confront him directly.
The “Gherao” of the PM’s Chair
The video shows women lawmakers “gheraoing” the Prime Minister’s seat, refusing to move despite persistent persuasion from Union Ministers. Cabinet members, including Ashwini Vaishnaw and Giriraj Singh, are seen pleading with the Opposition members to return to their seats and refrain from such conduct. However, the MPs remained unrelenting, standing firm while holding banners and posters.
This confrontation prompted Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to advise the Prime Minister to skip the proceedings that day to avoid an “unpleasant and ugly outcome.” Consequently, the Lower House passed the Motion of Thanks without the customary reply from the Prime Minister.
Rijiju Claims BJP Showed Maturity
Lashing out at the Congress leadership for “egging on” its members to block the Prime Minister’s path, Rijiju claimed that BJP lawmakers intentionally showed restraint to protect the sanctity of the institution.
“Congress Party is proud of the most degrading behaviour by their MPs. If we had not stopped all the BJP MPs and allowed the Women MPs to confront Cong. MPs, it would have led to a very ugly scene. We have very high consideration, to protect the dignity & sanctity of the Parliament,” Rijiju wrote on social media.
This footage provides the first clear glimpse of the hostility that marked the debate on the Motion of Thanks. While the video captures Opposition MPs attempting to confront the treasury benches, it also shows BJP ministers urging them to protest without crossing the established boundaries of parliamentary decorum.
