Jamshedpur, Jan 15: Even 48 hours after the abduction of Kairav Gandhi, the 24-year-old son of prominent Jamshedpur-based entrepreneur Devang Gandhi, Jamshedpur Police are yet to achieve any major breakthrough in the case.
The kidnappers have demanded a ransom of Rs 5 crore from the family using a foreign mobile number. Police investigations have revealed that the number from which the ransom demand was made belongs to Indonesia.
The Jharkhand Police have constituted seven special teams to ensure the safe recovery of Kairav Gandhi. These teams are conducting raids at suspected locations across Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha.
According to police, Kairav Gandhi left his home in his car around 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday. He informed his family that he would first visit the SBI branch in Bistupur, then proceed to his company in Adityapur, and would return home for lunch.
However, when he did not return home by 1.45 p.m., and his mobile phone was found switched off, his family grew concerned.
Kairav’s father, Devang Gandhi, told police that he was attending an important meeting in Adityapur on Tuesday when he received 8 to 10 calls from an unknown foreign number (+62-831-94765544) on his WhatsApp, which he was unable to answer.
Later, a message from the same number informed him about his son’s abduction and demanded ransom.
Police sprang into action following the information. Later that evening, Kairav’s car was found abandoned near a resort on NH-33 in the Kanderbera area of Chandil police station limits in East Singhbhum (Jamshedpur). The keys were still in the ignition, while his mobile phone was found lying on the ground beneath the vehicle.
Police said Kairav’s last mobile location was recorded near the Sonari Adarsh Nagar area of Jamshedpur. It is suspected that the kidnappers intercepted his car and forcibly abducted him into another vehicle.
Investigators have also identified a suspicious vehicle that was repeatedly seen circling around Kairav’s car. Although the vehicle bore the police insignia, the registration number was later found to belong to a different vehicle. Police are now actively searching for the vehicle.
The abandoned car is undergoing forensic examination, while the technical evidence is being gathered through call detail records and electronic surveillance.
Joint teams from Jamshedpur and Seraikela police are scanning CCTV footage from toll plazas and all exit points of the city.
Meanwhile, a police team remains in constant contact with the family, and the cyber cell is working to trace the source of the Indonesian phone number used by the kidnappers.
Saryu Roy flags alarm over Kairav Gandhi kidnapping case
Jamshedpur, Jan 15: Senior BJP leader and Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has taken up the abduction of young entrepreneur Kairav Gandhi with the state’s top police leadership, expressing grave concern over the safety and security situation in the city.
In a post on social media platform X on Thursday, Roy said he had spoken to Jharkhand Director General of Police Tadasa Mishra and Jamshedpur Senior Superintendent of Police Piyush Pandey, urging swift and serious action in the case.
He described the incident not just as a crime of abduction, but as a direct threat to a young man’s life, demanding the highest level of urgency from the authorities.
Earlier, in a video message, Roy said the kidnapping from a busy locality was extremely disturbing and reflected poorly on Jharkhand’s law and order.
He warned that criminal networks could still be operating in and around Jamshedpur, possibly using local contacts to carry out such crimes for hefty ransom.
Roy also conveyed to the DGP and the SSP that the incident has shaken public confidence, especially among the city’s business community, who now feel increasingly vulnerable.
He stressed that the police must trace the abductors and rescue the victim at the earliest.
Failing that, he cautioned, people of Jamshedpur may be forced to take to the streets to pressure the government into acting decisively.
The kidnapping of Kairav Gandhi, son of a prominent local entrepreneur, has triggered widespread concern across the city, putting the spotlight firmly on Jharkhand’s policing and public safety framework.
Jharkhand’s law and order in crisis, says MP
Jamshedpur, Jan 15: BJP MP Bidyut Baran Mahato has strongly criticised the Jharkhand government, alleging that the law and order situation across the state has completely collapsed, with daylight murders, kidnappings and armed robberies becoming routine from Ranchi to Jamshedpur.
Referring to recent incidents, Mahato said that just days ago, Jeet Mahato was allegedly illegally detained by the MGM police in Gokul Nagar, Jamshedpur, over a mobile phone worth barely Rs 500, and later died in police custody.
“Even after such a serious incident, the police have failed to take action against the guilty,” he said.
The MP also pointed to the killing of BJP leader Tarachand Mahato, who was shot dead in public in Galudih three days ago.
According to Mahato, Tarachand had earlier informed the police about threats to his life, but no preventive steps were taken.
“The police remained asleep despite clear warnings,” he alleged.
Highlighting what he called the most alarming incident, Mahato referred to the daylight abduction of young entrepreneur Kairav Gandhi on January 13.
He was kidnapped at gunpoint just a short distance from the residences of the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police.
“What could be more frightening than this?” Mahato asked, calling it a stark indicator of the breakdown of governance.
He further said that people in Jharkhand have been left helpless and are living in fear, with no faith in the system.
“Law and order has virtually ceased to exist. Criminals no longer fear the police,” he claimed.
Mahato also cited a series of recent crimes, including a gunpoint robbery near the Bistupur Gurudwara and the looting of a jewellery trader in Sonari, where criminals escaped after brandishing pistols.
He warned that the city is increasingly falling into the grip of drugs and liquor, further worsening the security situation.
Demanding immediate and decisive action, Mahato urged the district police and administration to act swiftly to ensure the safe recovery of Kairav Gandhi and to restore public confidence in law and order.
