Jamshedpur, Jan 12: In a swift and well-coordinated operation, Jamshedpur Police rescued a four-month-old baby boy within just 14 hours of his abduction and arrested the woman involved in the crime.

The incident took place at Degam Haat Market under the Kowali police station area on January 11.

According to police, the child’s mother, Pratima Sardar, a resident of Rangamatia village, had come to the crowded weekly market with her three small children to sell poultry.

Amid the rush, she briefly left her infant son, Indradev Sardar, in the care of her six-year-old daughter.

Taking advantage of the situation, an unknown woman abducted the baby at around 3 pm and fled.

When the family failed to trace the child despite frantic searching, the police were informed around 6 pm.

Acting immediately, a special team was formed under the supervision of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Musabani, on the directions of the rural superintendent of police.

Using technical inputs and ground intelligence, the team conducted continuous raids at possible hideouts.

Within 14- hours, the police successfully recovered the infant safely and arrested the accused woman.

She has been identified as Jhumarani Mandal (around 40 years old), wife of Prabhat Mandal, a resident of Meladihor under Kowali police station in East Singhbhum district.

The baby was safely reunited with his mother.

During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed that she kidnapped the child in an attempt to fill the emotional void of her daughterless life.

Police officials said more people may be involved in the crime and raids are ongoing to nab the absconding suspects.

Rural SP Rishabh Garg said the prompt and alert action of the police helped save the life of a helpless infant, and a detailed investigation into the case was underway.
