Kerala Samajam Jamshedpur celebrates Onam with grand welcome of King Mahabali

Jamshedpur, Sep 7: Kerala Samajam, Jamshedpur, celebrated the festival of Onam with great enthusiasm on Sunday, September 7 at its school premises in Sakchi.

Onam, the biggest and most important festival of Kerala, commemorates the annual return of King Mahabali, under whose reign people lived in happiness and equality.

The highlight of the celebrations was the symbolic “Welcoming of Mahabali.” A member dressed as the legendary king walked among the crowd, blessing people as per tradition, spreading joy and equality.

The cultural programmes added vibrant colours to the occasion with graceful Thiruvathira dance, energetic Kolkali, depiction of a boat race, melodious songs, and engaging games.

A special attraction was the flower decoration competition, ‘Pookala Matsaram,’ where teams showcased creativity by designing intricate rangolis with flower petals.

Traditional Kerala folk songs, accompanied by rhythmic drum beats, set the festive mood.

Performances of Kaikkottikali, a popular women’s group dance, and Uriyadi, the traditional game of breaking a swinging earthen pot, were enthusiastically received by the audience.

The festivities concluded with the grand Ona Sadhya, a traditional Kerala vegetarian feast served on banana leaves.

The elaborate meal, consisting of over 20 authentic dishes, was relished by more than 1,200 participants.

The celebration not only highlighted Kerala’s rich culture and traditions but also brought together the community in a spirit of unity, joy, and festivity.
