Jamshedpur, Aug 28: Netaji Subhas University hosted a captivating Kathak recital by internationally acclaimed danseuse Pallavi Dey, leaving the audience spellbound with her grace, rhythm, and storytelling. The event was organized in collaboration with the University’s Cultural Committee and SPIC MACAY.
A disciple of Kanan Sen and later trained under the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj at Kalashram, New Delhi, Pallavi Dey has carved a niche for herself as an exponent of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak. She has also had the rare opportunity to receive guidance from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhavan and has featured in acclaimed Hindi films Gaddar and Devdas under Birju Maharaj’s choreography.
Her performance included intricate footwork, graceful abhinaya, and traditional Kathak compositions that reflected both technical brilliance and emotional depth. The audience was particularly moved by the richness of her storytelling through dance.
Following the recital, Pallavi Dey engaged in an interactive session with students, sharing insights into Kathak’s history, discipline, and her personal artistic journey.
Professor Nazim Khan, Dean Administration, expressed gratitude, calling it an honor to host such a distinguished artiste. “This performance not only celebrated Indian culture but also inspired our students to value the dedication behind classical art forms,” he remarked.
SPIC MACAY, founded by Dr. Kiran Seth in 1977 at IIT Delhi, continues to promote Indian classical traditions globally, with branches in over 8,000 cities.
