Jamshedpur, Sept 2: Jharkhand Yuva Morcha (JYM) central committee vice president, Akram Khan met the state’s Minority Welfare Minister Hafizul Hasan and submitted a memorandum demanding a law against mob lynching in Jharkhand and urged him to table the issue during the forthcoming Monsoon session of the Jharkhand Assembly.
Akram Khan suggested in the memorandum that the proposed law against mob lynching should be state act that should fix responsibilities on police officials and magistrates to ensure such inhuman acts do not take place and in case of dereliction of duty should be punished under mentioned provisions of the act.
The memorandum demanded that there should also be a provision for punishment ranging from seven years to life imprisonment for those responsible for mob lynching. The families of victims of violence and of those seriously injured should be adequately compensated. Compensation should also be provided for damage to property. To prevent recurrence of such incidents, provision should also be made for the rehabilitation and complete safety of the victims and their families.
Taking serious note of the demand, Minister Hafizul Hasan said that the government should take an initiative on the issue soon. Jharkhand Yuva Morcha leader Akram Khan said in a press release issued on Thursday that during the tenure of the previous BJP government in Jharkhand, there were at least ten incidents of mob lynching, in which 18 people were killed. Despite speedy trials of these cases, only two cases of mob lynching had been judged so far, in which a total of 19 people have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Khan observed in his press note that the current law was not effective enough to stop mob violence and thus a special and stricter law was required to be enacted separately. Tanvir Ahmed, Dagar Hussain and Shahnawaz Alam were present during the presentation of the memorandum. It may be mentioned that after the Hemant Soren government took charge in Jharkhand, the demand for a special law against mob lynching was being raised regularly in the state.
