Jamshedpur: Chaos erupted at Booth No. 177 located at St. Anthony’s School in Jugsalai during the Jamshedpur Municipal Elections today. Following allegations of bogus voting, the situation escalated to the point where polling had to be suspended for one hour.
Allegations of Fraudulent Voting and Physical Altercations
According to reports, candidate Rinku Singh protested against the alleged bogus voting and staged a sit-in (dharna) at the booth along with her supporters. During the commotion, reports emerged of supporters Rahul and Shishir entering the booth and engaging in physical altercations.
It is further alleged that during the heat of the moment, some individuals’ voter ID cards and Aadhaar cards were snatched, and attempts were made to seize mobile phones.
Police Detain Supporter Following Clash
The dispute intensified as a clash broke out between police personnel and the supporter, Rahul. Consequently, the police detained Rahul by locking him in a room at the venue.
Upon receiving news of the incident, senior officials rushed to the spot to pacify the agitated crowd. After an hour-long disruption, the polling process was eventually resumed.
Voter Turnout: Chakulia vs. Jugsalai
Despite the controversies, voters continued to visit the polling stations. Data suggests that voters in Chakulia showed significantly more enthusiasm compared to those in Jugsalai.
By 2:00 PM, Chakulia’s Ward No. 4 recorded the highest turnout at 62.50%. In contrast, various wards in Jugsalai saw a much lower turnout, ranging between 30% and 37%.
Women Block Officials’ Convoy in Protest
A high-tension situation developed near the Dharamshala polling station in Jugsalai’s Chowk Bazar when Rinku Singh and her supporters blocked the convoy of the Circle Officer (CO) and Block Development Officer (BDO).
Alleging large-scale bogus voting, a large number of women sat on the road in protest, trapping the officials’ vehicles. Protesters claimed that irregularities were being overlooked in the voting process. Heavy security forces remain deployed at the scene as officials attempt to negotiate with the protesters.
Demands to Cancel Polling at St. John and Dharamshala Booths
Tensions remain high as protesters and candidates demand the immediate cancellation of polling at the St. John and Dharamshala booths due to the persistent allegations of fraud. While heavy police presence is maintained, demonstrators refuse to end their sit-in until action is taken.
