JNAC removes encroachments despite protests in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: Following an order from the Jharkhand High Court, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) initiated a campaign to remove encroachments and buildings constructed deviating from the approved maps in the city. The campaign, which commenced in Sakchi mango orchards, faced resistance from shopkeepers.

Despite protests, JNAC’s bulldozer proceeded to remove encroachments, resulting in the demolition of balconies on several shops. Action was taken against those who had extended their shops beyond permissible limits onto the roads. Despite the uproar from shopkeepers, the presence of heavy police force prevented them from obstructing the operation.

Although the shopkeepers attempted to show their documents, they were reminded that construction on road land through encroachment was unlawful. The commencement of the encroachment removal campaign led to further disturbances, prompting the intervention of the police, who resorted to using force to maintain order.

Encroachment has been a significant issue in Jamshedpur, prompting a public interest litigation that resulted in the High Court’s directive for JNAC to identify and take action against unauthorized structures.
