JNAC to Build ₹86.61 Crore Sewage Treatment Plant in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has finalized an ambitious ₹86.61 crore project to modernize the city’s drainage system and curb river pollution. Under this initiative, the administration will overhaul major drains in Moharda, Bagunhatu, Bhojpuri Colony, and Baridih (Zila School) and construct a high-capacity 44 MLD (Million Liters per Day) modern Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

Ending Direct River Pollution

The project primarily aims to treat wastewater from four major urban sectors before it reaches the water bodies. Currently, untreated effluent from these drains flows directly into the Subarnarekha River. The new plan implements an “Interception and Diversion” strategy to redirect the flow straight to the treatment facility. This shift will significantly reduce river pollution and provide local residents relief from persistent foul odors and unsanitary conditions.

Two-Year Execution Timeline

JNAC Deputy Municipal Commissioner Krishna Kumar confirmed that the agency selection process is already underway. “We have accelerated the implementation process,” Kumar stated. The application window for specialized agencies will remain open from March 28 to April 17. Once awarded, the chosen agency must complete construction within two years and handle the system’s operation and maintenance for the following five years.

Advanced SBR Technology

The project’s standout feature is the integration of computer-based Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology. This modern system offers several advantages over traditional plants:

  • Space Efficiency: Operates effectively on a smaller land footprint.

  • Automation: The system automates the entire cycle from water filling to purification, eliminating human error.

  • Superior Filtration: Beyond removing physical waste, SBR technology neutralizes harmful dissolved elements like nitrogen and phosphorus.
