Jamshedpur : JMM activists today demonstrated at the district collectorate and submitted memorandum to the director district rural development agency Ranjana Mishra today protesting against anti-encroachment drive in Birsanagar area.
“We are here to protest the district administration’s anti-encroachment drive in the Birsanagar area. The administration has not touched concrete three-storied and four-storied structures in the area but has demolished under construction structures and plots of poor people. We protest double standards of district administration,” said Pradeep Kumar Singh, JMM Birsanagar block president.
The JMM leaders further said that the anti-encroachment drive by the district administration was against the state government move to give ownership rights to urban slums (bastis).
The JMM leader threatened that if administration does not stops eviction drive then they would stop functioning of government offices like JUVNL office, a primary hospital and Moharda drinking water supply office at Birsanagar apart from stopping the drive.
Sources informed that several illegal jhuggis and shops have been raised in areas in Mango, Golpahari, Loco Colony, Karandih, Jugsalai, Sakchi and Bistupur. Though several times the anti-encroachment drives have been carried but due to support of local goons the people are able to intrude the land again.
“The eviction drive is being taken up in view of a plan to widen the road to enable of operation of buses and traffic through it. Encroachment of public land in the city has become an urban eyesore. It has brought traffic movement to a crawl. Steps need be taken to vacate the illegal constructions,” said a district official.
