JMM leader Aastik Mahto’s father-in-law passes away, contested assembly elections from Ichagarh

Jamshedpur, Feb 15:  Veteran Congress Party leader, Uday Krishna Mahto died at his home on Tuesday. He was 76 years old. Uday Krishna Mahto’s son-in-law, Astik Mahto is a prominent JMM leader.

Uday Krishna Mahto was a diehard Congress leader and a big name in Ichagarh Assembly constituency.  His last rites were performed in his native village. His only son, Nityanand Mahto lit the funeral pyre.

Uday Krishna Mahto left behind his son, Nityanand, daughter-in-law, three married daughters including Gita Mahto, Sandhya Mahto and Runu Mahto and grandchildren. His close friend and confidante, Mahant Vidyanand Saraswati ji Maharaj of Pardih Kali temple expressed deep grief on hearing the demise of Uday Krishna Mahto and rushed to the family home and remained with the family till the completion of final rites. Uday Mahto had contested the Assembly election from the Ichagarh constituency on Congress ticket in 1980 that he lost.

 Aastik Mahto said that his father-in-law Uday Krishna Mahto was very active in social and political fields of the area. He said, “Former Chief Minister of United Bihar, Late Jagannath Mishra during his Kolhan visits invariably visited his residence and held discussions on various issues.”

Astik Mahto stated that his father-in-law and participated in the Jharkhand separate state movement and despite being a Congress man, he provided unrestrained help to the late JMM leader Nirmal Mahto.

 After receiving the news of his death, former Union Minister of State for Home, Subodh Kant Sahay expressed his condolences over the phone. Among the mourners who visited Uday Krishna Mahto’s residence to pay their condolences and participate in the funeral ceremony were Ichagarh MLA Savita Mahto, former MPs Shailendra Mahto and Abha Mahto, AJSU leader Harelal Mahto, Sadhucharan Mahto’s wife Sarathi Mahto, Khagen Mahto, Hikim Chandra Mahto and many others.
