Jharkhand: Three Juveniles Escape Gumla Observation Home

Gumla (IANS): Security at the Silam Juvenile Observation Home is back under the scanner after three juveniles escaped the facility on Friday by scaling the boundary wall. The incident has triggered a high alert across Gumla and neighbouring districts.

The Escape

According to officials, the three juveniles—two from Lohardaga and one from Gumla’s Ghaghra area—managed to climb the facility’s high perimeter wall. Authorities believe the escapees may have sustained injuries during the climb.

Of the three, two were facing charges for serious criminal offenses, while the third had been detained in a theft case.

Immediate Police Action

District Child Protection Officer and facility in charge, Amar Kumar, alerted the police immediately after the breach was discovered.

  • Manhunt Underway: Search operations are currently active at multiple suspected hideouts.
  • Family Coordination: Police teams are working with the families of the juveniles to secure their quick return.
  • Regional Alert: All police stations in the region remain on high alert to prevent the escapees from leaving the district.

Repeated Security Failures

This incident marks a recurring failure at the Silam facility, which has a history of similar escapes. While previous inquiries led to promises of strengthened surveillance, this latest breach exposes significant and persistent gaps in the home’s monitoring and security management.

District authorities have ordered a fresh internal inquiry to determine exactly how the juveniles breached the “secure” premises and to identify those responsible for the lapse.
