Jamshedpur, April 25: Jharkhand reeled under an unforgiving blaze on Saturday as Daltonganj in Palamau district emerged as the state’s hottest spot, recording a scorching 44.6°C—the highest temperature of the season and a stark four degrees above normal, according to meteorological data.
Long known for its searing summers, the Palamau headquarters once again lived up to its furnace-like reputation, with the mercury soaring to punishing levels.
The heatwave extended its grip across multiple districts, with West Singhbhum and parts of Bokaro registering oppressive highs hovering around 42°C.
The absence of any immediate rainfall prospects has only deepened concerns, as weather officials have prolonged the severe heatwave warning into the coming week.
Dry, desiccating winds swept across much of the state, including the Kolhan region, intensifying the discomfort.
Jamshedpur recorded a maximum of 40.3°C—slightly above normal—though it had touched an even higher 42°C earlier in the week.
Ranchi, too, simmered at 40.8°C, more than three degrees above its seasonal average, turning the capital into a veritable heat trap.
Neighbouring Seraikela registered a sweltering 42.6°C, while Koderma hovered around 42°C. Gumla and Hazaribagh were not far behind, each recording temperatures close to 41°C, underscoring the widespread intensity of the heatwave.
While the current spell shows little sign of immediate relief, meteorologists have indicated a possible shift in weather conditions beginning April 26.
Isolated parts of north-eastern and adjoining central Jharkhand may witness hailstorms accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.
Similar activity, albeit less intense, is expected across other regions.
This pattern is likely to persist through April 27 and 28, offering a glimmer of respite amid an otherwise relentless spell of extreme heat.
For now, however, Jharkhand remains firmly in the grip of a scorching summer, with residents bracing for more sweltering days ahead.
