Jharkhand Gets Over ₹674 Crore
Ranchi: The Union Government has infused significant capital into Jharkhand’s rural infrastructure, releasing two major tranches of funds under the 15th Finance Commission to strengthen Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) across the state.
On Wednesday, the Centre announced a fresh release of ₹405.23 crore for Jharkhand as part of a larger ₹1,536 crore package distributed among eight states. This latest allocation focuses on tied and untied grants aimed at improving the quality of life in rural pockets.
Total Inflow for FY 2025–26
This announcement follows closely on the heels of a March 25 release, where the Centre provided ₹269.03 crore to Jharkhand as the first installment of untied grants for the 2025–26 financial year.
Jharkhand’s Funding Breakdown:
-
March 25 Allocation: ₹269.03 Crore (Untied Grants)
-
April 1 Allocation: ₹405.23 Crore (Tied/Untied Grants)
-
Total Recent Inflow: ₹674.26 Crore
How the Grants Will Be Utilized
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti recommend these funds to ensure rural local bodies have the financial muscle to manage essential services.
-
Untied Grants: Local PRIs can utilize these funds to address specific community needs across 29 subjects listed in the Eleventh Schedule. This includes infrastructure and local projects, though the funds cannot cover salaries or establishment costs.
-
Tied Grants: These funds carry strict mandates for “basic services.” Jharkhand must use this portion to:
-
Maintain Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status.
-
Manage household waste and fecal sludge.
-
Ensure drinking water supply and promote rainwater harvesting and water recycling.
-
The National Context
While Jharkhand received a substantial share, the Centre also released funds to Rajasthan (₹466.79 crore), Telangana (₹371.91 crore), and several other states including Uttarakhand and Odisha. The Ministry of Finance executes these releases in two annual installments to ensure a steady flow of developmental capital to India’s grassroots.
