DBMS College students explore sustainable living at Pahar Bhanga Eco Farm

Jamshedpur, June 7: To mark World Environment Day, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit and Eco Club of DBMS College of Education organized an educational visit to the ‘Mud and Meadows’ farm at Pahar Bhanga. B.Ed. students, faculty members, and staff participated in the programme aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable living.

During the visit, students interacted with noted educationist and environmentalist Dr. Bikrant Tiwary, a Harvard University Ph.D. holder and alumnus of IIM Kolkata. He introduced students to the concept of permaculture and explained the importance of adopting an eco-friendly and self-reliant lifestyle in harmony with nature.

Spread across seven acres, the ‘Mud and Meadows’ farm is known for its sustainable development practices and biodiversity conservation. Structures at the farm are built using natural materials such as mud, turmeric, and cow dung, reflecting a blend of traditional knowledge and modern environmental practices. Dr. Tiwary also shared information on natural farming methods and the need to protect the environment.

Students observed the cultivation of paddy, pulses, vegetables, potatoes, and onions, along with rare plants like Rudraksh, coffee, red sandalwood, and mahogany. As part of the programme, participants planted saplings of mango, guava, litchi, jackfruit, and Champa trees to spread awareness about environmental conservation.

College officials, faculty members, and staff were also present during the visit. Refreshments prepared from fresh farm produce were served at the end of the programme.
