Jharkhand High Court Pulls Up Chatra Police Over Alleged Illegal Detention of Matric Student

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court on Monday took serious note of the alleged illegal detention of a matriculation student in Chatra district and questioned the role of the police in the matter.

Hearing a petition related to the case, the court expressed concern over allegations that the minor student was kept in unlawful custody for nearly 10 days without being produced before a magistrate, as mandated by law.

The bench sought a detailed explanation from Chatra Superintendent of Police Sumit Agrawal regarding the police action and the circumstances under which the student was reportedly detained. The court specifically asked why the student was not presented before a magistrate within the stipulated time and what steps had been taken against officials found responsible for any procedural lapses.

The court observed that adherence to due process is fundamental to safeguarding citizens’ rights, particularly in cases involving minors. During the proceedings, the court underscored that the police must strive to build and maintain a positive image among the public. It remarked that public trust in law enforcement is essential and can only be sustained through transparency, accountability, and strict compliance with legal norms.

The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on February 27, when the court is expected to review the response submitted by the district police authorities.
