Jharkhand HC calls for report from Dhanbad SSP regarding worsening law and order

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court took cognizance of a public interest litigation (PIL) initiated suo motu, prompted by reports of an attempted land grab involving the property of a deceased retired Supreme Court judge. During the proceedings on Thursday, the court has requested a comprehensive report from the government regarding the actions undertaken by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) thus far. The court is particularly interested in knowing the measures taken by the SIT against the land mafia operating in the area.

In addition to this, the court has also called for answers from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Dhanbad concerning the deteriorating law and order situation in the district. The court has set a two-week deadline for the submission of the report, during which it expects to be informed about the steps being taken to enhance law and order within the district.

The background of this legal action involves an attempted land seizure on the property of the late retired Supreme Court Justice, Late Yusuf Iqbal, by individuals believed to be part of the land mafia. Following the publication of news related to this incident, the High Court took suo motu notice and subsequently converted it into a PIL, which is currently under the High Court’s consideration. The High Court has also directed the Dhanbad SSP to actively participate in this PIL.
