Jharkhand Elections: Suspense continues over JMM candidate for Baharagora

Baharagora, Oct 22: As the Jharkhand Assembly elections draw nearer, Baharagora seat has emerged as one of the most hotly contested battlegrounds.

Anticipation continues to build as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha remains undecided on its candidate for the Baharagora assembly seat.

With Kunal Sarangi officially joining the JMM camp in the presence of sitting party MLA Samir Mohanty at Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence and the Chief Minister personally inducting Sarangi into the party, the political atmosphere has further warmed up to and enhanced high.

Following Sarangi’s entry into JMM, party workers from Baharagora and Chakulia were glued to their phones and televisions, eagerly awaiting news of who will receive the party ticket.

However, as of Tuesday afternoon, JMM had not made an official announcement. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is expected to announce the list of candidates by late Tuesday.

The change in electoral faces has made the fight in Baharagora nail-biting.

Both party workers and the general people in the Baharagora constituency are keenly watching the developments, as the upcoming assembly elections approach and the Baharagora seat gains increasing political attention.

Meanwhile, the BJP has thrown its weight behind former State president Dr. Dineshanand Goswami.

In 2019 Assembly elections, BJP fielded Kunal Sarangi against JMM’s Samir Mohanty. Kunal was the sitting JMM MLA from Baharagora and joined the saffron party just days before the polls but lost the battle by 60,565 votes.

Talking about 2014 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, Sarangi fought the election on JMM ticket and defeated Dineshananda Goswami of BJP by a margin of 15,355 votes. Kunal got 35.78 per cent of the votes.​

Samir Mohanty, who had joined the BJP after his loss in 2014, returned to the JMM after nearly 15 years. Mohanty contested 2014 assembly poll on JVM ticket.

Baharagora is one of the 81 assembly constituencies in Jharkhand. It is part of the East Singhbhum district and falls under the East Singhbhum Lok Sabha constituency.
